The Tioga County Homeless Initiative (TCHI) launched its Capital Campaign Committee in 2019 with a clear vision: to build a new, modern shelter facility that better meets the needs of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in our community.

In just the first six months, the committee raised an impressive $300,000 thanks to the generosity and commitment of our donors and supporters. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we had to temporarily pause campaign meetings. In April 2021, we resumed our efforts with renewed energy and focus.
One of our priorities was to revisit the original building plans. We worked closely with our architect to update cost estimates for both construction and soft costs. Once we had a clear understanding of the revised expenses, we turned our attention to assembling a dedicated Building Committee. This group was made up of individuals with the experience and insight needed to guide the project forward.

The Building Committee began meeting in May 2021 and made several important recommendations to improve and update the building design. On November 4, 2021, we celebrated a significant milestone: the official groundbreaking for our new shelter. During the winter months, we focused on completing items related to soft costs and preparing for full-scale construction in the spring.

As of today, our Capital Campaign has raised over $700,000 toward our goal, with the total project estimated to exceed one million dollars. We are incredibly grateful to the local contractors and businesses who have pledged to donate labor and services. Their generosity is helping to significantly reduce our overall costs and bringing us closer to making this vision a reality.
Our new shelter building is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents a new beginning for those who walk through our doors. With this space, we will be able to provide expanded services including housing support, assistance with SSI and SSDI applications, connections to healthcare and employment resources, and safe, welcoming shelter for those in need.
Both the Capital Campaign and Building Committees continue to meet regularly as we move this project forward. We believe that together, with your continued support, we can build a place of hope, dignity, and opportunity for those who need it most.

Your contribution to our building fund is deeply appreciated and helps us change lives.
With gratitude,
The Board of Directors
